Lauretta Jeans’ Brick and Mortar!!

13 Sep

Today, Portland pie lovers have a place to call heaven: Lauretta Jean’s pie shop at 600 SW Pine St.. You may have tasted Kate McMillen’s perfect pie confections at the Saturday PSU Farmers Market, but if you are not in the know, this woman makes the best pie…ever. Her butter crusts are unreal and chocolate cream pie sliders are straight TROUBLE! While the summer days last, enjoy a slice of pie (on a fancy plate) and cup of Stumptown joe in their patio seating, otherwise this tiny spot of goodness is take out only. Open Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm.

Woodsman Tavern and DJ Safi (unrelated)

12 Sep

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending the Motley Cue event hosted by Musicfest NW and Whole Foods. Nina Lary and I mingled and sampled the BBQ offerings of the five, mega talented chefs, Jason Barwikowski of Woodsman Tavern, Tommy Habetz of Bunk Sandwiches, Han Ly Hwang of Bhap Sang PDX (formerly Kim Jon Grillin), Naomi Pomeroy of Beast, and Carolynn Spence of Chateau Martmont.

That night Nina and I ate a lot of good meat, but the stand out item was the lemongrass pork on a stick, served with a quick carrot pickle from Jason Barwikowski, who in October will be opening the much anticipated Woodsman Tavern. Not only is Jason a super rad dude, but he is  damn fine chef and there is gonna be nothin, but good vibes and killer food at the Woodsman.

Evan Zimmerman and Jason Barwikowski, the bad boiz of Woodsman Tavern

Throughout the shit shootin, food eating and beverage drinking, I kept finding the need to move my body or sing along to the awesome jams provided by DJ Safi. That woman has musical taste that rivals Rob Gordon, topped off with a healthy dose of Afro Beat. This Friday she will be playing a set of 60’s Congolese and Calypso beats at Dig A Pony that you don’t want to miss.

Taste of Summer at Central

28 Apr

I am on the hunt for the perfect summer drink. Something refreshing, not too sweet and a taste of unexpected. I asked my right hand lady, Ayni Raimondi and our dear friend Nina Lary to join me at my first stop: Central. Central is nestled up against my favorite downtown venue, Valentine’s on SW Ankeny. The colors are metal, brick and dark wood, the lighting is low and seductive, and a large vintage fan that hangs from the ceiling casually stirs the air. Our server, Alison was so great, I was tempted to ask her to sit with us and our bartender Justin Diaz whipped up 3 cocktails that had me ready to put on my swimsuit.

Paper Plane: bourbon, Amaro Nonino, and Aperol.

This cocktail was like biting into a grapefruit, sweet and bitter.

Airmail: Jamaican rum, honey syrup, lime, and sparkling white wine.

This was Ayni’s favorite, so I will use her description: “dried apricot, making out in Italy, with a slightly herbal aftertaste” .

Gordon’s Cup: gin, muddled lime, mint, cucumber simple syrup, salt, pepper, and lime juice.

Not only do Nina and I love striped tops and red lipstick, but this cocktail was hands down our favorite. It was fresh, light, and the salt and pepper was just the unexpected I was looking for.

Thanks Justin!

p.s. their crepes are killer. Shown above is the salmon, poached egg, avocado, chevre (which we got without, so their gracious chef added extra avacado) and lime. Paired with the Airmail, true summer perfection!

The MS.MS. Get Down!!

24 Mar

The dance party that Ayni and I have been dreaming about since the day we met, is finally at hand! Tomorrow night at the stroke of 9, the epic-ness of The MS.MS. Get Down will be unleashed! We have a killer line-up: DJ Cuica, DJ Jeffrey Jerusalem, DJ Clown Egg, and No Gold (Vancouver BC), the rich and grungy (yes both at once) atmosphere of the Spare Room, the ultimate memory maker photo booth, and lots of uber desirable raffle prizes!!! Plus all you beautiful people that in less than 24 hours will be dancing the night away!!!! I would have to use an embarrassing number of exclamation points to express just how excited I am.

Ayni and I would like to thank EVERYONE that has helped in making this event possible, this next song is for you.
