Basement Gallery Grand Opening

26 Nov

I chatted up Ms. Danica Molenaar about the grand opening of her new space The Basement Gallery:

msms: What inspired you to open the Basement Gallery?

danica molenaar: I was mainly motivated to start the space because I feel like it’s something that people in Portland will be really responsive too. There is such a strong sense of community here, but a lot of that energy I feel gets channeled towards music and music venues. I think a lot of people are intimidated by the art world, or have some kind of stigma against it, so I am hoping to make it something that is more accessible to people.

msms: What kind of shows are you hoping to have?

dm: I am totally excited to see what happens with this space, I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s all just kind of happening on its own.

msms: What can we look forward to at the opening?

dm:  This first show is going to be mainly photography but there will also be a painter and a digital collage artist showing some pieces as well. DJ Cosmic Steel (of Macrocosm) will be spinning some old psych music and there will be wine and beer and friends and amazing art!
